Computer Tote Project

Process
To start the computer tote project, I sketched out several concepts, carefully considering all the features I wanted to include. This included a dedicated computer pocket, a large front pocket, a water bottle pocket, zippered compartments for pens and small items, and a spacious main compartment. I then referenced bags I had seen and liked, adjusting the dimensions to create a size that felt practical and well-proportioned. Once I had finalized the measurements, I translated my design into a pattern using Adobe Illustrator.
With the design finalized, I began working on the first prototype. To give the bag structure, I repurposed an old yoga mat, which worked perfectly for the computer pocket since it was thick and durable. However, using it in other parts of the bag made it surprisingly heavy. The prototype turned out well overall, but I identified a few changes that were needed — I decided to replace the foam with a lighter alternative, add interfacing to the straps for better support, and change the direction of the zipper for improved accessibility.
I then adjusted the pattern and created the next version of the bag. This time, I used a lighter foam to maintain structure without adding extra weight. I also reinforced the straps for improved durability and support. With these changes, I was really happy with the outcome.
The final bag became the perfect everyday carry. The straps were wide enough to stay comfortable on my shoulders, even when the bag was full. It had plenty of space to fit everything I needed, and my computer fit securely and snugly in its designated pocket, making it both practical and reliable for daily use.
